Ammonia is a colorless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. It is lighter than air, its density being 0.589 times that of air.

Industrial Use
  • Ammonia is the starting material for nitric acid manufacture.
  • It is used in calibration gas mixtures for environmental emission monitoring, petrochemical industry, industrial hygiene monitors and trace impurity analyzers. It is also used in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced materials for the deposition of silicon nitride (Si3N4) by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
  • Ammonia is a refrigerating fluid used instead chlorofluorocarbons (freons) in some refrigerators.
